Rapid High-fidelity Wind Farm Terrain and Wake Simulations for Industry

Wind energy specialists Everoze and high performance computing (HPC)/computational fluid dynamics (CFD) specialists Zenotech show how rapid high-fidelity wind farm terrain and wake simulations using GPUs can lower the cost of clean energy for a net-zero future. The requirements for higher-fidelity modeling of wind farms arises from the changing nature of the wind energy business and the impact of uncertainty of power production on the cost of initial project financing. High-fidelity modeling is needed to augment and replace more traditional forms of wind resource data and farm layout analysis — particularly to capture steep terrain slopes with separated air flow, atmospheric stability characteristics, and the effects of forestry on the wind field. We'll present typical analysis results for a real wind farm, including benchmarks for performance on the latest AWS P4 compute nodes with the NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs.
