Blender USD Import and Rendering

We will present an implementation of a USD importer for Blender as a case study for introducing the fundamentals of converting USD to an application's native scene representation. We will describe the Blender USD importer design, covering the basics of the USD C++ API for traversing the USD stage and for converting USD schemas to Blender's native object, data and attribute representations. As an advanced topic, we will present Tangent Animation's implementation of the HdCycles Hydra render delegate plugin for Cycles and its evolution towards a complete production-proven renderer named "Blackbird". The role of Blender and USD in Tangent Animation’s production pipeline will provide a context for the presentation and will highlight the value of USD as an interchange format for optimizing workflows. We will also discuss the importance of USD integration as the basis for including Blender in the Omniverse ecosystem. The talks will include a discussion of how this work conforms to the Blender Institute’s model for adopting contributions from the developer community.
