Using AI to Discover New Antibiotics

Genentech is using AI for target identification in two main areas: phenotypic screening of small molecules for antibiotic discovery and short macrocycle discovery. Using graph neural networks, we identify active molecules in novel parts of the chemical space with acceptable accuracy. By combining deep learning with principles of evolutionary biology, a novel way to select hits was formulated.
