A Better View: NVIDIA Earth-2 and The Weather Company Collaborate for a More Resilient & Sustainable World

During March 2024, NVIDIA launched the Earth-2 digital twin program that provides enabling technologies for improved prediction in the modeling of Earth’s weather and climate based on advances in HPC and AI. These developments include GPU acceleration for numerical-based prediction models, AI/ML software and system features for large-scale training of AI surrogate models, rapid ML model construction with NVIDIA PhysicsNeMo, and digital twin and visualization development using NVIDIA Omniverse. The Weather Company has deployed NVIDIA technology for over a decade, starting with visualization of weather forecasts for broadcast television and then extending to GPU acceleration of their numerical weather prediction model, GRAF, and recently has extended their capabilities in a direct collaboration with NVIDIA to implement Earth-2 technologies. At the core of the Earth-2 and The Weather Company collaboration are fast AI models that are trained on the high-resolution forecast data made possible by the TWC weather technologies. This session will present an overview of the NVIDIA Earth-2 digital twin technologies, highlight the various ways The Weather Company plans to adopt Earth-2, and explore what’s possible in weather forecasting and visualization across industries such as defense and aviation.
